The Great Earning Caper was the 20th episode of Season 4 of the The Brady Bunch TV series, also the 92nd overall episode in the series. Written by Larry Rhine and Al Schwartz, the episode, which was directed by Leslie H. Martinson, originally aired on ABC-TV on March 2, 1973.
Cindy takes a pair of earrings Carol loaned to Marcia, and loses them. Cindy enlists budding detective Peter to help find the jewelry before Marcia or Carol find out. The pressure is on when Carol wants to wear them to a costume party (the planning of which is the subplot) where she and Mike plan to dress as Antony and Cleopatra. When the truth comes out the family reconstructs the events before Cindy lost the earrings, and find them in the washing machine – damaged.
Carol lends Marcia her favorite earrings, which are family heirlooms. Although she is told explicitly not to touch them, Cindy can't help but try them on when Marcia isn't around. When called by her mother, Cindy hides the earrings in a towel on the bathroom counter.
When finished dealing with her mother, Cindy returns to the bathroom to find the earrings are gone. The one person Cindy confides in is Peter, who is learning how to be a detective akin to Sherlock Holmes and who she thinks can help her locate the earrings without anyone else finding out what they're doing. Can they find the earrings before anyone finds out Cindy lost them? Meanwhile, Mike is letting Carol decide what costumes to wear for a costume party they attend every year. Mike isn't as easy going about Carol's suggestions as he initially lets on he would be.
