Coming-Out Party was the 17th episode of Season 2 of the The Brady Bunch TV series, also the 42nd overall episode in the series. Written by Alfred Lewis Levitt and Helen Levitt, and directed by Oscar Rudolph, the episode premiered on ABC-TV, airing on January 29, 1971.
An innocent tale about the time the Bradys were invited to spend a Sunday afternoon on Mr. Phillips' boat - that is, if Cindy and Carol can get over tonsillitis and Carol can keep her big mouth shut!
Just as Mike's boss Ed Phillips (Jack Collins) invites the Brady family for an outing on his boat, Cindy comes down with tonsillitis. Dr. Howard (John Howard) thinks Cindy's tonsillectomy could be performed after the trip, but then discovers that Carol also has tonsillitis. Mike decides to postpone the boat trip, but the trip gets canceled when Carol inadvertently insults Mr. Phillips. The confusion is later resolved and the family goes on the trip.
Everyone in the Brady household is excited by the invitation from Mike's boss, Mr. Phillips, to spend the day on his sailboat deep sea fishing, everyone that is except for seasick-prone Alice. That trip, however, is threatened by Cindy, who seems to be coming down with a cold. After being examined by Dr. Howard, their family doctor, Cindy is diagnosed with a case of tonsillitis. Dr. Howard recommends that Cindy be admitted into the hospital the day of the fishing trip to have her tonsils removed.
Dr. Howard also has a second unexpected diagnosis: Carol, too, should be admitted to the hospital at the same time to have her tonsils removed, her's which are even more inflamed than Cindy's. Beyond the issue of the minor surgery for the eldest and youngest of the Brady women, the family is excited that Mr. Phillips is willing to change the date of the sailing trip to the following weekend, when Carol and Cindy should have fully recovered. But even that sailing trip is threatened by Carol, who isn't supposed to speak post-surgery, but who has some choice words to utter.
