54-40 and Fight is the fifteenth episode of Season 1 of The Brady Bunch. Written by Burt Styler and directed by Oscar Rudolph, it first aired 9 January 1970 on ABC.

Short Summary[]

The girls and boys fight over how to spend 94 books of trading stamps quickly, as the trading stamp company is going out of business.

Summary[]

Alice arriving back from grocery shopping with said items in hand is the first time that the boys and girls find out that the other collects Checker Trading Stamps, the boys who are saving for a row boat, the girls a sewing machine. It doesn't help matters that Alice has a drawer full of stamps from past shopping trips.

Although the boys and girls each want Alice's stamps for themselves, they are convinced to split them equally. However, that does not resolve the underlying competition in collecting and differences in wants in redeeming the stamps between the siblings, even after Carol suggests they both share their stamps for something they all would want as they already have enough stamps between the two for the row boat, the sewing machine or something else equally as nice.

Her suggestion takes on new urgency when it is announced the Checker Trading Stamp Company is going out of business in thirty days. They have to figure out how to decide what to get before the stamps become useless. Carol and Mike allow a deciding competition to be held, the building of a house of cards. The girls win, but their sense of compromise wins out and they buy a portable color television set.

Trivia[]

  • Reused stock footage from the episode "Katchoo" was used in this episode. Alice was seen bathing Tiger in the washtub, while he was trying to run away. This exact scene was used in "Katchoo" when Alice, along with the rest of the Bradys were all unknowingly washing Tiger multiple times in one night.
  • A scene in this show featured Marcia and Greg accusing each other of stealing their stamps, only to later figure out that Tiger was seen walking around with them the whole time. A similar joke was previously used in the episode "Kitty Karry-All Is Missing", where Bobby and Cindy accused each other of stealing their doll and kazoo, only to find out that Tiger took them all along.
